PAROLE HEARING DATE: September 24, 2025 – GRANTED
CASE SUMMARY: Funston’s victims included a 5-year-old girl he lured into his car with candy and drove away to a secluded area. He forcibly and violently sexually assaulted the girl. He also choked her when she initially refused, shoved her underwear into her mouth when she screamed, and punched her. Funston took a 4-year-old boy into some bushes and sexually assaulted him. Funston then lured a 4-year-old girl into his car with jewelry and toys and took her to a house. He molested the victim and while holding a knife to her throat and threatening to kill her and her family if she told anybody.
PRIOR HISTORY: At age 15, Funston molested a 6-year-old girl. At age 22, he fondled a highly intoxicated female co-worker. At age 23, he punched a woman in the face, breaking her nose. At age 24, he dragged an intoxicated woman behind a building and chocked her, threatened to kill her and sexually assaulting her.

CASE SUMMARY: In 1998, inmate Sandra Shayne drowned her 4-year-old daughter while her daughter was “kicking and screaming into the bathtub.” Soon after, the child was found blue and limp. When CPR was administered, blood came out of her mouth. The child was pronounced deceased by responding medics. The next day, Shayne packed up all of her deceased daughter’s belongings and gave them to a neighbor’s daughter saying, “she was glad to finally get on with her life.” At her parole hearing, Shayne stated she was jealous of the attention her daughter received from her love interest and she felt burdened by her daughter. She told police she thought that if her daughter were not there, maybe she and her love interest could be together and have their own baby. During her 2025 parole hearing, Shayne stated that she had no feelings of love or compassion for her daughter, she didn’t want to have her and didn’t consider letting someone else raise her. She also admitted to excessively spanking to borderline beating her until she “actually killed her” that she stated as “straight up a beating abuse.”

CASE SUMMARY: Inmate Padilla grabbed a 13-year-old girl’s arms and dragged her
into a room, pulled her onto a bed and raped her as she cried and begged him to stop. Padilla threatened the victim saying, “if you tell anybody, I will kill you.” At the parole hearing, Padilla stated that he remembered the victim was crying, and she told him not to do it, but he still did it because he wanted to. He also stated, “I believe in myself that it’s, it’s okay to hurt people for rape.” He also admitted that his lust for underage girls and his bad behavior might come back. Padilla said his plan once released was to live with his sibling and their children. If he lives there, he “plans” to make sure the kids are always supervised by an adult.

CASE SUMMARY: Inmate Farris forcibly raped and sodomized 4 different female victims between April 1997 and December 1998. At the 2025 parole hearing, inmate Farris confirmed that in one case, there was nothing about the victim that suggested she was willing to have sex and that he had, in fact, forced himself on her. Inmate Farris went on to tell the parole panel that after discovering the victim was deaf, he found that she could lip-read and that he could communicate with her. He stated the victim said “no” when he began to assault her and even though he understood her, he did it anyway. He minimized violence he used during the rapes, including choking. He also admitted that he received sexual arousal from humiliating his victims, forcing non-consensual sex, and that he took pleasure in them being submissive to him and having control. He called himself a “anger rapist” because the more the victims resisted the more angry he became and continued with the rape – he claimed he was angry at himself for not being to control himself. He had a self-proclaimed need for non- consensual sex.

CASE SUMMARY: Inmate Por Her got into an argument outside a nightclub. It quickly escalated with inmate Her shooting two men at close range – each in the face/neck area. He also shot a third man in the back as he fled, killing him. At the parole hearing, Inmate Her acknowledged he felt his pride was hurt and his lack of self-control and anger led him to shoot the victims. He admitted he did not shoot the victims in self-defense. He states alcohol is has been a problem for him and he might get tempted by bars once released into the outside world.

CASE SUMMARY: Inmate Aburto repeatedly molested and raped a young girl during the period of roughly one year. Inmate Aburto threatened to kill the victim’s family if she ever told anyone about molestations/rapes by the inmate. During a 2024 parole hearing, Aburto stated he objectified and abused the child because it gave him a sense of power and he took the opportunity to abuse the victim because “she was there” and “she was available.” He found ways to get access to the victim and continued the abuse for more than one year. When the child resisted, he would hold her down. Abusing the victim was an escape for him and gave him a “natural high.” Aburto also admitted to being violent towards other children.

CASE SUMMARY: In 1991, inmate Knapp lured a 21‑year‑old woman into his vehicle. He took her to an isolated area, where he assaulted her. She escaped to a nearby residence and reported the crime. In 1992, he broke into the home of a 23‑year‑old woman at night while armed and masked. He restrained her, threatened her and her family, and carried out a prolonged sexual assault. In a parole hearing, Knapp reported he had sexual conduct with an 8-year-old female when he was 14 and that he molested a young family member. It was also stated at the parole hearing that Knapp was diagnosed with a voyeuristic disorder. Knapp stated he was sexually charged, stimulating when he looked into the window of unknowing females while in the state of undress or private activity.
