On June 2, 2026, Alimohammed Hamid was convicted by a jury of second-degree murder. The jury also found true a use of firearm allegation.
On February 24, 2024, the victim, Joseph Soto, parked in a Wingstop parking lot and began walking toward the restaurant. Alimohammed Hamid was parked in the next space. As Hamid backed out of his parking spot and drove toward the lot exit, he rolled down his rear passenger window and began a verbal exchange with the victim. The victim responded, which led to a brief argument. When the victim turned around to walk back toward the restaurant, Hamid retrieved a firearm from the center console and fired one shot out of the back window, striking the victim in the back. Hamid immediately fled from the scene and discarded the gun and shell casing. On March 21, 2024, the victim succumbed to complications from the gunshot wound.
Hamid faces a maximum sentence of 40 years to life in prison. Sentencing is set for July 1, 2026, at 3 PM in Department 12B before the Honorable Ernest Sawtelle.
