On August 19, 2026, Jonathan Arredondo-Garcia was convicted by a jury of two counts of first-degree felony murder with the special circumstance of multiple murders and murder during the commission of a carjacking found true on both counts. Arredondo-Garcia was also convicted of two counts of robbery, carjacking, two counts of attempted carjacking, hit-and-run and resisting arrest. The jury also found true a use of knife enhancement.
On January 19, 2023, Arredondo-Garcia went on a 30-minute crime spree in south Sacramento. He first walked into the garage of a victim with a knife and demanded the keys to victim’s van. After handing the keys over, the victim picked up a plumbing tool and started to swing it at Arredondo-Garcia until he ran away. Minutes later, Arredondo-Garcia ran in front of a car and intentionally smashed the front end of their car with his body, causing significant damage before fleeing. Minutes later, he walked into the garage of a third victim, where he pushed her to the ground before stealing her vehicle and driving off at approximately 98mph. When he reached the intersection of Florin and Florin-Perkins Roads, he drove through his red light, causing a fatal collision that killed two people. Arredondo-Garcia exited the vehicle and immediately tried to carjack a driver. Bystanders were able to subdue Arredondo-Garcia until law enforcement arrived. When a Sacramento Sheriff’s deputy who was nearby responded to the scene, Arredondo-Garcia resisted arrest until additional units arrived to assist.
Arredondo-Garcia faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Sentencing is set for September 11, 2026, at 1:30 PM in Department 13A in front of the Honorable James Arguelles.
