The Honorable Shelleyanne Chang sentenced Jimmy Washington to life in prison without the possibility of parole. On November 7, 2025, Washington was convicted by a jury of first-degree murder with the special circumstance that the murder was committed during the commission of a carjacking found true. The jury also convicted Washington of carjacking and found true a great bodily injury allegation.
The victim, James Nguyen, was an ATM technician. On June 17, 2021, he was fixing a drive-up ATM at the Wells Fargo near Stockton Blvd. and Florin Rd. His work van was parked feet away from him. Jimmy Washington was at the bank cashing a check. While the victim worked on the ATM, Washington carjacked the victim’s van. When the victim attempted to prevent the carjacking, Washington sped through the parking lot with the victim dangling from the open driver’s side window. Washington drove recklessly and nearly hit pedestrians and other vehicles. The victim fell from the van and was run over as Washington drove away. The victim was in a vegetative state for nearly nine months until he eventually succumbed to his injuries.
